A Bridge in the spotlights during YOUR CITY

Running a business, meeting other people, doing research, eating, listening to music: it was all happening during I Bridge You. On top of the pedestrian bridge between the Zuidplein shopping centre and the Motorstraat area an eight metre high ‘living’ bridge was constructed as part of YOUR CITY, Young people are making Rotterdam Zuid. From Thursday 29 until Saturday 31 October 2009 the bridge was programmed for and by young citizens who were assisted by visual artists Chantal van Heeswijk and Ruud Reutelingsperger. In an adventurous way, young people showed how they would like to use their city.

opening

Throughout October and November 2009 the manifestation YOUR CITY, Young People are making Rotterdam Zuid, took place, an initiative of the Kijk op Zuid foundation and AIR, Rotterdam’s architecture institute. During YOUR CITY young citizens had a say in what happened on bridges and in undeveloped areas. Together with visual artists and architects they worked on proposals for their own living environment; young citizens as project developers of their own areas. Workshops were held with designers and other relevant professionals about what good areas for young citizens are and why? New coalitions were formed in which young people play an important role. During the concluding event at the end of November 2009 the findings of all the parts of the Your City programme were put together. Young people presented these results to the municipality, local residents, professional and other young citizens.
